2016 R6 SECTION PRE-COLLEGE INITIATIVES

A source of inspiration

The engagement of IEEE in elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools find no boundary. Here are examples of initiatives pursued by Region 6 Sections in 2016.

BUEANAVENTURA SECTION

"With the financial support of the IEEE Foundation, we organized a field trip for 50 middle school students from Ventura County to demonstrate  Precision Agriculture using IR imaging taken from the sky from a flying  drone." $6.5K budget

Bueanventura Section Chair

EASTERN IDAHO SECTION

"Every year we support a Math Count competition with both funds and volunteers. This past year we also held a tour/activity in which high school students attended."

 J. Hope Forsmann

Easter Idaho Section Chair

SANTA CLARA VALLEY SECTION

The SCV Section Teaching Opportunities for Partners in Science Committee supported K-12 teachers by encouraging engineers to team up with teachers in the teaching activities.

BUENAVENTURA SECTION

"Players of the Light gathered 65 middle school girls who were introduced to lightwave technology, photonics, and imaging through 9 workshops - Lighted wearables, IR cameras, virtual reality, holographic imaging, lightwave electronics, UV spectrum, and electro-luminescent technology. "

Budget ~ $8K with assets that can be kept for future events.

"We have supported (2014-15,16) the Northern California Future Cities group at $2000 each year." Ed Aoki, SCV Section Chair

RICHLAND SECTION

" A team from Richland School District is heading to the National Future City competition in February. Over the last several months, students from Three Rivers HomeLink and Enterprise Middle School have been meeting at the Richland Public Library to design a city of the future. Using the engineering design process, each team had to create a solution to the theme “The Power of Public Space” and integrate it into a city of their imagining. To deliver their solution team wrote a 1500 word essay, created a virtual city, followed a project plan, build a model, and presented in front of several panels of judges.

At the regional competition at WSU-Pullman on 1/14, the RSD teams earned a tie for second place and third place. The top three teams progressed to the state competition at Shoreline Community College. Overcoming not just the first place team from regionals, but a room full of competitors from all over the state, Team Nayajal edged out the competition and earned the right to compete in Washington DC in February.

These students have worked extremely hard as a team under the guidance of their mentor, Kyungyoun Kim. The city of their future is in India and has successfully cleaned up the Ganges River, one of the most toxic, yet culturally significant, places on the planet. Their unique solutions combined an awareness and respect for the cultural implications of the Indian culture and Hindu religious rituals, as well as stellar integration of multiple engineering disciplines, all while consider the power of public space to create community and build the social and emotional health of a region.

The team will now fly out to Washington DC on 2/17-2/22 to compete against the winners of the other state competitions. Good luck, Team Nayajal! Way to represent!!

FOOTHILL SECTION

"The U C Riverside student branch does at least one Boy Scout merit badge day a year, 100 scouts or so and has done so for many years.  It is quite an event."

Art Sutton

FOOTHILL SECTION

Foothill Section helps financially with the MATHCOUNTS competition for middle school students at the Riverside-San Bernardino Chapter competition held at Cal Baptist in Riverside, and with the San Gabriel Chapter competition held at Cal Poly.  Some Section members help in conducting the competition.  These competitions each have around 100 or so middle school participants.

LOS ANGELES COUNCIL

"Larry Dalton supported the Los Angeles science fair for several years.
